Accreditation services

Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) is the only nursing body in Australia that offers a nationally consistent course accreditation service. It is a process by which a course is assessed by an expert panel against pre-determined standards set by RCNA. To accredit a course is to certify that it meets professional standards and requirements.

What can be accredited with RCNA?

Any educational course or program available to nurses Australia wide which has either a formal assessment process or award such as a certificate of completion, or a course which has a formal curriculum, can be accredited by RCNA. The course curriculum must demonstrate educational outcomes. Students need to be formally enrolled and their learning assessed.

Benefits of Course Accreditation with RCNA:
  • Providers are given acknowledgement that they meet a consistent standard nationally.
  • Accreditation with RCNA provides a benchmark for course providers. It also provides guidelines to potential course developers, of the nursing profession’s expectations to minimise the risk of courses being developed in isolation from the wider profession.
  • Accreditation with RCNA enables potential students to be assured that the course is of an appropriate standard for the nursing profession and that it provides value to their learning goals and needs.
  • Accreditation with RCNA is a national process. It therefore allows mobility for nurses.
  • Accreditation is about ongoing evaluation of courses and their providers. RCNA offers ongoing support and feedback to education providers, ensuring that RCNA members and other nurses are accessing the best possible education available to them at that time.
  • Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) points are allocated to accredited educational courses, offering participants the opportunity to accrue points towards the annual requirement in RCNA’s Life Long Learning Program (3LP).
