History of the project

The 2001/2002 Federal Budget allocated $103.4M over four years to a program of support for the employment of nurses in general practices. This support was targeted to areas of high general practice workforce pressure, particularly rural and remote Australia.

The initiative aimed to encourage general practice to employ more practice nurses to reduce workforce pressure and improve access to primary health care. Nurses in general practice:
  • support better management of chronic diseases
  • coordinate care
  • undertake population health activities
  • provide clinical support which enables General Practitioners to focus on diagnosis and clinical care.

Pap test credentialling for practice nurses
Practice nurses undertaking pap tests must be appropriately qualified and trained - which includes being credentialled in states where credentialling is available. All practice nurses undertaking pap tests must also have completed an accredited course. To find out more about RCNA’s pap test credentialling program, click here.
